私は学生の時にインドへ行ったのがきっかけで海外旅行が好きになりました。文化や人種、言葉の違う異国に身を置いたときのワクワクする高揚感が好きです。一日中街を歩きホテルに戻るとその日の出来事や印象を10ｃｍⅹ15ｃｍのハガキに描いて日本に送ります。
Day by Dayシリーズです。季節ごとに30年位続きました。私の表現はハガキだけでなく彫刻、絵画、ドローイング、版画、インスタレーションと多岐にわたります。
彫刻は蠟鋳造のブロンズが主です。電材のエフケーブルもよく使います。これは家庭の天井に使われている素材です。昔話の座敷ワラシのお話しの置き換えで天井に張ってあるケーブルが現代のワラシとなって出現します。
主な作品のテーマは耳です。たくさんの情報社会の中、情報の海に溺れてしまいそうに感じています。そして孤立感がいっぱいです。このような自分の状況を耳のドローイングや彫刻にしてあらわしています。音楽は私を楽しませてくれ安堵させてくれる妙薬です。その音楽をオイルパステルを使って表現しています。
かとうかずみが表している美術の活動は生きる上で私の生命をしっかりと強めていると感じています。私を包むこの世界が大好きですから。

I love to travel.
I used to create art on a post card with the small things that I find while traveling around the world.
For example at the Tate in London, I found toilet papers that were thin and stiff. I cut it into a small piece and glued the red sugar wrapper from the coffee shop in the middle. This is my art at the Tate, of the day that I visited there.
I collect things like subway tickets, shopping receipts, juice coasters and free papers; simple daily items that come to me during my trip without me trying to get them. I put them on a post card or draw on them and send them to myself to my Japanese address. I have sent more than 1,000 post cards in 15 years. Those post cards are not the only art that I do. I do everything from prints, sculptures, paintings and drawings.
I love using lost-wax bronze casting for my sculptures. They are born in the mixture of the wax melting in the warmth of my hands and the shape corresponding to my body. It still carries the sweetness and softness of wax but turns itself into strong bronze.
I have started using an electronic cable called F cable. It is very light unlike other materials commonly used for sculptures. I can give it some movements depending on how I put it together. I like how playfully it moves even when it is put still.
For drawings, my theme is “to hear.” Ears are the doors to words. Words are the base of my relationship with the society and existence. I hear sounds, words, anxiety, quietness and slight changes in the air, those are what I would like to express with my eyes and hands.

After the trip to India, I begin in earnest “on-site production” in 1985 destinations. I put the body in the different place of culture and history. I made postcard-size works in the various ways, drawing, painting, collage, assemblage, etc. Those works were sent back to my home. I still continue the way of working on the very time, in the very place as the series of “DAY BY DAY.”
